building upon that which was created by my maternal great grandmother and grandmother, i continue adding new pieces to the quilt in an attempt to heal the past, for myself and for those that came before me.
the Yoruba have an annual festival during which a chosen person wears a head and body mask made of multicolored strips of cloth. new cloth is added each year, in honor of the Egungun, the ancestors; their blessings are then felt through the whirling winds created by the mask wearer’s ecstatic dance.
it is to this tradition that i pay homage. |
